Prienai district is
located in the south of Lithuania. Natural environment is the greatest
treasure of the region, that is why the greater part of the territory
belongs to the Nemunas Loops' Regional Park. The aim of the park is to
preserve picturesque valleys, fascinating
loops of the river and the surrounding forests. The district covers 1141
square kilometers and has a population of 34522 inhabitants. It is
divided into 10 smallest rural administrative divisions – Neighborhoods/Elderships.
The town of Prienai (with
population of 11353 inhabitants) covers both sides of the Nemunas
River.
Prienai is at the
juncture of very important route connecting two major towns of Lithuania:
Vilnius (100 km) and Kaunas (30km).
A variety of service
providing organizations, wood or timber processing, sewing, construction
enterprises form the main branches of a local economy. The clothing and
wood industries are the largest exporters in the region.
Pociunai avia-tourism
center represents our national aviation: Joint Stock Company „Sport
Aviation“ design, build, test and repair glider-planes; Closed Joint
Stock company „Termikas“ fulfills micro-plane repair works; Kaunas
County Sport Aviation Club provides air-taxi service; Parachutist Club gives
possibility to enjoy parachute jumps.
Centuries-old cultural
heritage is preserved in the historical and archeological monuments (there
are nearly 150).
