Accueil Remonter karkkila Relation of the stay

Wednesday 30 April
Visit of Dinan (medieval town) and St Malo
( corsaires town)
 |
Unsettled weather with occasional rain.
The draught is definitely over : flowers are blooming and
farmers are happy. (a thought to the finnish farmers who have suffered from
dry weather)
But for the Karkilla group, they' d rather have a warm
and sunny day. Nevertheless, they will have an idea of our typical Norman weather.
|
Dinan is one of the finest of all Brittany's "Towns of Artistic and
Architectural Interest" and it has lost none of its mediaeval charm. It's many
superb half-timbered houses, Romanesque and Gothic churches, convents and
chapels, picturesque streets and squares all take visitors back in time to days
long gone.
 |
Beware Dinan girls ! The Karkillians are in town ! |
 |
We are going to start our guided tour. Mr Fabian is leading the way |
 |
The
most beautiful half-timbered houses are to be found on the place des
Merciers, a fine collection with timbering and corbelling from the 15th
century.
Watch out !!! Don't stay
under !
One never knows... |
 |
The two nice teachers from Karkkila and their waterproof umbrella. |
 |
Nothing
remains of the Cordeliers Convent, founded in the mid-thirteenth century.
The convent buildings were for the most part rebuilt in the 15th century.
It was sold to the revolutionary authorities and then, from 1807, was
turned into an educational establishment by Abbot Bertier.
Today it is a private secondary college, Les Cordeliers |
 |
The
Church of Saint-Malo was begun at the end of the 15th century.
Everybody is inside
except Yann and friends. |
 |
The harbour
It is
the site on which Dinan was founded approximately 1000 years ago, at the
foot of a rudimentary château. The harbour was the centre of intense
activity. Today the harbour caters for pleasure craft as well as being
departure point for sailings down the River Rance.

St Malo is very much a maritime town set as it is facing out
to sea. Granville is on the other side of the bay. We spend a few hours,
for walking, picnicking and... shopping.
